Children in the United States experience violence in many forms. They are the victims of physical and sexual abuse within their families, they witness battering of and by their parents, and they experience or witness violence in their schools and communities. Poor children are especially at risk for experiencing these forms of violence. Recently, considerable research has accumulated documenting the psychological impact of such violence on children's development. This book brings together in one volume the latest findings from researchers on violence, with the aim of integrating findings and pointing out gaps in our knowledge that future research will need to address. The book also describes promising interventions that have helped children already damaged by violence and suggests strategies for preventing violence before it occurs. The book is divided into five sections that cover developmental consequences, causes, interventions, prevention, and future research and public policy issues. This volume will be a resource for developmental psychologists, violence researchers, social workers, and policy makers.

In this exciting new book John Hamel, author of the ground-breaking Gender-Inclusive Treatment of Intimate Partner Abuse, and Tonia Nicholls go beyond the traditional intervention theories of domestic violence practiced today. Offering alternative, unbiased and sometimes controversial views, theories, and current research, they, along with renowned contributors in the field, provide new treatment options that encompass a wide range of gender dynamics. Here are just some of the key principles covered: Interventions Should Be Based on a Thorough Unbiased Assessment Victim/Perpetrator Distinctions are Overstated, and Much Partner Abuse is Mutual Regardless of Perpetrator Gender, Child Witnesses to Partner Abuse are Adversely Affected, and are at Risk for Perpetrating Partner Abuse as Adults This new gender-inclusive approach to assessment and intervention provides a significant departure from traditional paradigms of domestic violence, and offers a much-needed awareness to effectively prevent violence in our communities today and for future generations.

Strengthening families of different varieties and ending abuse in the myriad of forms through which it surfaces is God's way of bringing peace and safety to Christian homes across the world. We challenge congregations, their leaders, and the men, women, and youth who faithfully support them to consider their personal role in bringing this vision--inspired by the Scriptures--into reality. Together our voices can be strong. We are united in our belief that every home should be a safe home, every home a shelter from the storms of life, every home a place where we are supported, treated with respect and dignity, and every home a place where men and women are encouraged to be all they can be. It is a tall order. It is a dream to guide our personal conduct and to measure our congregational and community life. We are far from reaching this goal--but toward it we strive.

This updated edition of the classic book on risk assessment presents the latest research regarding the prediction of interpersonal violence. In clear and accessible language, the authors address the specific variables involved in the prediction of child abuse and homicide, as well as intimate partner violence and homicide. This edition also presents an important revision of Campbell's ground-breaking intimate partner homicide lethality risk instrument, the Danger Assessment. All of the contributors to this multidisciplinary volume have faced the difficult task of assessing the risk of family violence in a wide variety of settings--courts, clinics, shelters, emergency rooms, protective service offices, schools, batterer intervention programs, violence prevention programs, and more. Their combined experience in research and practice makes this an indispensable resource for all clinicians required to make predictions about violent behavior. Key features of this new edition include: Coverage of a wide breadth of clinical and court situations requiring threat assessments A review of the latest assessment instruments New findings on predicting fatal child abuse Legal and ethical issues in risk assessment
