Much has changed since the beginnings of the gay liberation movement and the feminist movement in the 1970s in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Yet, to a degree, the invisibility of gay male, lesbian and transsexual lifestyles as well as individual struggles for rights and recognition remains. The diverse contributions in this book discuss how the reframing of ‘queer’ as a proud, border-crossing identity challenges conventional views of gay, lesbian, transsexual and heterosexual identities. At the heart of queer politics and theory lies the double irony that ‘queers’ still experience different social positions and are confronted differently by public challenges, and they also seldom agree about how, and for what political reasons, sexuality should be defined and categorised. In this book, 'queer' brings together wide-ranging commentaries on the history, politics and culture of thirty years of sexual history in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Sexuality permeates most aspects of everyday life. As it is both a hot topic and a taboo subject at the same time, its study is important and controversial. Essays in this book give many insights into issues surrounding sexuality in art, in advertising, in prostitution, in homosexual law reform and in relation to teenage motherhood, rape, medical practice, and male sexual 'disfunction'. As well, there are essays on how the West responded to indigenous Pacific peoples, and New Zealand's 'satanism scare' of the 1990s. CONTRIBUTORS: Chris Brickell, Barbara Collins, Rob Cover, Caroline Daley, Jenny Harper, Michael Hill, Jan Jordan, Allison Kirkman, Pat Moloney, Libby Plumridge, Cameron Pritchard, Tiina Varies.

This edited collection explores the important connections between sexualities, geographies and leisure studies. Chapters consider aspects of sport, leisure and tourism and show how sexualities are produced and reproduced within these spatial realms. The critical and interdisciplinary analyses—which are evident in the collection—focus on sexuality and the socio-cultural power relations produced through and in the spaces of leisure. These theoretical discussions are all informed by recent research findings and, importantly, extend existing debates within the fields of geography and leisure studies. A range of appropriate and relevant topics are covered, including critical debate on sexism, homophobic, heterosexism and heteronormativity as well as specific LGBT experiences of sport spectatorship, socialising, Mardi Gras and skiing. This book offers a unique collection and it is the first of its kind. This book was published as a special issue of Leisure Studies.

In the last ten years, social scientists have begun to explore how societies have come to define what it means to be a man and how this definition changes over time. This is the first interdisciplinary collection in New Zealand on this emerging topic, bringing together authors from the disciplines of anthropology, geography, women's studies, education, history and media studies.
