Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668), known as a passionate painter of horses, varied his popular main theme imaginatively in a wide range of topics. This catalog allows for a rediscovery of the Haarlem master, who's picturesque, brilliant paintings fetched higher prices during his lifetime then works by Rembrandt and Vermeer. At his death, Wouwerman left an impressive oeuvre of some 600 paintings. From the earliest beginnings to the artist's late work, this contemporary of Frans Hals busied himself with an almost obsessive detail to the representation of horses. Because of his thematic variety and captivating natural landscapes, Wouwerman's paintings were highly prized amongst citizens, nobles, and kings during the 17th and 18th Century. With the depiction of about 40 full-page color paintings and drawings, this volume provides a representative overview of Wouwerman's work. Insightful discussions and in-depth photo essays about his life, artistic development, and influence on other artists vividly demonstrate that this painter of the Gilded Age has undeservedly fallen into oblivion. Truly collaborative paintings, that is, not simply mechanical but also conceptual co-productions, are rare in the history of art. This gorgeously illustrated catalogue explores just such an extraordinary partnership between Antwerp's most eminent painters of the early seventeenth century, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625). Rubens and Brueghel executed approximately twenty-five works together between around 1597 and Brueghel's death in 1625. Highly prized and sought after by collectors throughout Europe, the collaborative works of Rubens and Brueghel were distinguished by an extremely high level of quality, further enhanced by the status of the artists themselves. Published to coincide with an exhibition at the Getty Museum to be held July 5 to September 24, 2006, the catalogue features twenty-six color plates of such Rubens/Brueghel paintings as The Return from War, The Feast of Achelos, and Madonna and Child in a Garland of Flowers, along with Rubens and Brueghel's collaborations with important contemporaries such as Frans Snyders and Hendrick van Balen. This is the first such publication to fully address and reproduce these works in depth.

This superb book presents 100 notable examples from the Harvard Art Museums’ distinguished collection of Dutch, Flemish, and Netherlandish drawings from the 16th to 18th century. Featuring such masters as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, and Rembrandt van Rijn, the volume showcases beautiful color illustrations accompanied by insightful commentary on prevalent styles and techniques. Genres that define this artistic period—landscape, scenes of everyday life, portraiture, and still life—are explored in detail. The book also presents the results of new conservation and technical study, including infrared analysis and scientific examinations of drawing materials. This revelatory new research has allowed previously illegible underdrawings and inscriptions in many of the artworks to surface for the first time, shedding light on longstanding mysteries of production and provenance.
