Layered double hydroxides are one of the variety of names given to a family of layered materials first discovered in Sweden in 1842. These materials are interesting because their layer cations can be changed among a wide selection, and the interlayer anion can also be (nearly) freely chosen. Like cationic clays, they can be pillared and can exchange interlayer species -- thus increasing applications and making new routes to derivatives. The principle areas of application include catalyst support, anion scavengers, polymer stabilisers, and antacids. In the last several years, reviews and studies of LDHs have dealt with these uses. This book aims to update the current body of LDH knowledge from a wide array of views. The first section addresses the synthesis and physiochemical characterisation of these materials, and section two focuses on the applications of LDHs.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) or hydrotalcites are inorganic clay materials with many promising properties. LDHs are a family of natural and synthetic compounds having the general formula [M(II) 1-x M(III)x (OH)2 ](Yn-))x/n yH2O, where M(II) and M(III) represent divalent and trivalent metal ions, respectively, and Yn- is the anion between the layers. They consist structurally of brucite-like [Mg(OH)2] layers, with a net positive charge due to partial substitution of M(II) by M(III). This positive charge is balanced by the anionic interlayer anion. Over the past few years, an increasing interest has been directed to the use of these clays as host materials, anion exchangers, delivery carriers and additives for polymers in order to create potential products with desirable physical and chemical properties. From the many significant research achievements and the many potential practical applications, it is assumed that the prospects for LDHs and their composites with the different organic and bioactive materials are very bright indeed and still more remains to be done in order to exploit completely their potential applications. In this book, we focus on the progress of the development of LDHs and their derivatives, including the synthetic techniques, the nanocomposite preparation routes, the factors affecting the physicochemical properties and how these properties affect the nanoparticle structure and the host-guest process. Furthermore, we summarise the current LDH potential applications and the possible future trends in agricultural, biological and medical researches (eg: the role of LDHs as reinforcements, as catalysts and catalyst supports) in the field of catalysis, as a carrier in drug delivery and as host for a safe preservation of the bioactive material.

This thesis presents a combination of material synthesis and characterization with process modeling. In it, the CO2 adsorption properties of hydrotalcites are enhanced through the production of novel supported hybrids (carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide) and the promotion with alkali metals. Hydrogen is regarded as a sustainable energy carrier, since the end users produce no carbon emissions. However, given that most of the hydrogen produced worldwide comes from fossil fuels, its potential as a carbon-free alternative depends on the ability to capture the carbon dioxide released during manufacture. Sorption-enhanced hydrogen production, in which CO2 is removed as it is formed, can make a major contribution to achieving this. The challenge is to find solid adsorbents with sufficient CO2 capacity that can work in the right temperature window over repeated adsorption-desorption cycles. The book presents a highly detailed characterization of the materials, together with an accurate measurement of their adsorption properties under dry conditions and in the presence of steam. It demonstrates that even small quantities of graphene oxide provide superior thermal stability to hydrotalcites due to their compatible layered structure, making them well suited as volume-efficient adsorbents for CO2. Lastly, it identifies suitable catalysts for the overall sorption-enhanced water gas shift process.

Hydrotalcite (HTC) was intercalated with different aromatic carboxylic acids via two synthesis methods: reconstruction and co-precipitation. The reconstruction method involves the rehydration of the products of LDH calcination. The co-precipitation method involves the addition of a base to solutions containing a mixture of the MII and MIII ions found in the metallic layers of an LDH. The intercalated compounds were then compounded with flexible grade PVC to see if these compounds had any effect on the heat stability of the PVC. Complete intercalation of these stabilisers did not occur; however layered double hydroxides did form for almost every synthesis. The organic acids that were to be intercalated were also present in every synthesised stabiliser. Neat hydrotalcite was the best overall stabiliser with an early stability time of 32.40 min and a final or long term stability time of 106.51 min. The best modified layered double hydroxide (LDH) in terms of early stability was 4-hydroxybenzoic acid + HTC synthesised with the reconstruction method. This stabiliser had an early stability time of 25.40 min. The best performing modified stabiliser in terms of late stability was salicylic acid + HTC synthesised with the co-precipitation method. This stabiliser had a late stability time of 71.32 min. The highly activating nature of the hydroxyl substituent group should make hydrotalcites intercalated with hydroxybenzoic acids good free radical scavengers. The substituent group positions that give the best PVC heat stability are the ortho and para positions. The pKa 2 value for an organic acid may be used as a selection parameter for intercalation into hydrotalcite. If a high pKa 2 value organic acid is intercalated into hydrotalcite, the resulting compound will have good PVC heat stabilisation properties.
