The first edition of Sexual Conduct, published in 1973, swiftly became a landmark text in the sociology of sexuality. It went on to profoundly shape the ideas of several generations of scholars and has become the foundation text of what is now known as the "social constructionist" approach to sexuality. The present edition, revised, updated, and containing new introductory and concluding materials, introduces a classic text to a new generation of students and professionals. Traditional views of human sexuality posit models of man and woman in which biological arrangements are translated into sociocultural imperatives. This is best summarized in the phrase "anatomy is destiny." Consequently, the almost exclusive concern has been with the power of biology and nature in sexual conduct as opposed to understanding the significance and impact of social life. In Sexual Conduct, Gagnon and Simon lucidly argue that sexual activities, of all kinds, may be understood as the outcome of a complex psychosocial process of development. Using the social script theory, the authors trace the ways in which sexuality is learned and fitted into particular moments in the lifecycle and in different modes of behavior. Sexual Conduct is a major attempt to consider sexuality within a non-biological, social psychological framework. It is a valuable addition to the study of human sexuality, and will be of interest to students of sociology, psychology, psychiatry, social work, and medicine.

This is the eBook of the printed book and may not include any media, website access codes, or print supplements that may come packaged with the bound book. Choice, Awareness, Responsibility Human Sexuality, Third Edition, helps students develop and design their own sexual philosophy. Every chapter begins with actual student questions from the author's files during nearly 20 years of teaching the human sexuality course. Throughout each chapter the questions are answered and new ones are posed--encouraging students to think critically, analyze, and apply the material in personally relevant ways. Hock takes a psychosocial approach, infused with biological foundations throughout the text. The book focuses on topics that are most critical and of greatest relevance to students' personal lives and their interactions with others, and on how these topics affect them emotionally, psychologically, and interpersonally. This student-centered approach is incorporated into the text's discussions of all areas of sexuality: psychological, social and biological (including medical issues, sexual health, sexual anatomy and sexual physiology). Sensitivity to diverse groups, not only in terms of race and ethnicity, but also in terms if sexual orientation, age, sexual knowledge, and sexual experience allows all students to feel as comfortable and open about sexual topics as possible. Up until the turn of the century, adolescent males with sexual behavior problems were treated using an adult criminological model. Recently however, it has been proven that juvenile offenders benefit most from a holistic program designed specifically for this younger age group. Male juvenile sex offenders are a unique population in need of specialized treatment. Work with adolescent sexual offenders is complex and should address not only the criminal behavior, but developmental and behavioral issues as well. This therapist guide describes a three-phase treatment for use in residential settings with young men who have perpetrated sexual crimes. Based on the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy, the developed program is designed to address social and cultural influences on the youth's behavior, family dynamics, and peer influences. Phase I of treatment focuses on social skill development and impulse control. The aim of Phase II is to help participating youth develop a healthy understanding of sexuality and sexual relationships. Youth are also taught anger management skills. In the final phase of treatment, the goal is to foster in youth cognitive and emotional understanding of the negative physical, emotional and social consequences of sexually abusive behavior. Phase III presents relapse prevention strategies as well. The concept of healthy masculinity is introduced at the start of the program and carried throughout. According to scientific research, the majority of juvenile sex offenders who have undergone the treatment in this guide do not go on to sexually reoffend or become adult sex offenders. Complete with step-by-step instructions for facilitating treatment, as well as sample dialogues, case studies, and homework assignments, this guide is an essential resource for everyone working with this unique group of clients.

The Oxford Handbook of Theology, Sexuality, and Gender presents an unrivalled overview of the theological study of sexuality and gender. These topics are not merely contentious and pervasive: they have escalated in importance within theology. Theologians increasingly agree that even the very doctrine of God cannot be contemplated without a prior grappling with each. Featuring 41 newly-commissioned essays, written by some of the foremost scholars in the discipline, this authoritative collection presents and develops the latest thinking in these areas. Divided into eight thematic sections, the Handbook explores: methodological approaches; contributions from neighbouring disciplines; sexuality and gender in the Bible, and in the Christian tradition; controversies within the churches, and within four of the non-Christian faiths; and key concepts and issues. The final, extended section considers theology in relation to married people and families; gay and lesbian people; bisexual people; intersex and transgender people; disabled people; and to friends. This volume is an essential reference for students and scholars, which will also stimulate further research.
