This lively memoir by Linda Powell takes us from the swinging 60s to the present day. We hear of her challenges, successes and escapades over this 50-year period and we meet some inspirational people who are doing extraordinary things to improve the lives of others and to create a better world. Their stories deserve to be told. Linda was described by The Times newspaper as “humorous and unassuming” and her story starts in Jamaica, where she worked as a volunteer teacher. From there we travel to Haiti, the United States of America, the East End of London, Eastern Europe, Africa, Central America, India and Cambodia. Her narratives range from humorous and entertaining to moving and heart-wrenching. They weave together to form a personal portrait of a life spent learning from passionate, motivational people. Throughout, we are presented with a clear picture of the political situation of the day and its impact on Linda and those around her. Among her wide range of experiences, we hear about her role as a teacher and headteacher in large secondary schools in London; her voluntary work in Jamaica, South Africa, Ghana and Uganda; her direct action against injustice; and her tangles with the military in a number of countries. This book is a tribute to human-kind, a social history of the time, and an amusing and informative read for all who enjoy travel. All proceeds from the sale of this book will go directly to three charity organisations concerned with empowering girls and women and improving the provision of education in Africa and South East Asia. Details about these organisations are given on the final page of the book.

Rudyard Kipling: A great Victorian, a great writer of Empire, a great man. Rudyard Kipling was one of the most popular writers of prose and poetry in the late 19th and 20th Century and awarded the Noble Prize for Literature in 1907. Born in Bombay on 30th December 1865, as was the custom in those days, he and his sister were sent back to England when he was 5. The ill-treatment and cruelty by the couple who they boarded with in Portsmouth, Kipling himself suggested, contributed to the onset of his literary life. This was further enhanced by his return to India at age 16 to work on a local paper, as not only did this result in him writing constantly but also made him explore issues of identity and national allegiance which pervade much of his work. Whilst he is best remembered for his classic children's stories and his popular poem 'If...' he is also regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story.

In this musical memoir, Renato P. Escarcha chronicles how a life he had at first intended to be of service to God served as a preparation for an unexpected twist of fate. Rene discovered, during his years in the seminary, his passion in playing the guitar and in song-writing, inspired predominantly by the world-famous cultural icon- Elvis Presley. Back then, Rene never predicted that when he settles in "the land of milk and honey" (as he wrote in his original composition "Western Land"), he would become Renelvis, the Charlotte-renowned Filipino Elvis impersonator. Creative Loafing music editor Fred Mills once wrote, "If you close your eyes, he takes you to front row center at the Elvis concerts of your memory," referring to no other than Renelvis. After his wife Esperanza died of cancer in 2005, Rene has been the sole caretaker of their only daughter Josephine, who has special needs. Rene considers Jing her muse and lucky charm. Now having accumulated at least three dozen Elvis hand-made jumpsuits and having performed in over 500 shows in North Carolina and a few other states, the enthusiastic Renelvis still sees himself more as a song writer than a singer, which he hopes his audience will finally see. The last two chapters in this memoir showcase the songs in Rene's released albums.
