All parts of our body having communication with the external environment such as the skin, vagina, the respiratory tract or the gastrointestinal tract are colonized by a specific microbial community. The colon is by far the most densely populated organ in the human body. The pool of microbes inhabiting our body is known as “microbiota” and their collective genomes as “microbiome”. These microbial ecosystems regulate important functions of the host, and their functionality and the balance among the diverse microbial populations is essential for the maintenance of a “healthy status”. The impressive development in recent years of next generation sequencing (NGS) methods have made possible to determine the gut microbiome composition. This, together with the application of other high throughput omic techniques and the use of gnotobiotic animals has greatly improved our knowledge of the microbiota acting as a whole. In spite of this, most members of the human microbiota are largely unknown and remain still uncultured. The final functionality of the microbiota is depending not only on nutrient availability and environmental conditions, but also on the interrelationships that the microorganisms inhabiting the same ecological niche are able to establish with their partners, or with their potential competitors. Therefore, in such a competitive environment microorganisms have had to develop strategies allowing them to cope, adapt, or cooperate with their neighbors, which may imply notable changes at metabolic, physiological and genetic level. The main aim of this Research Topic was to contribute to better understanding complex interactions among microorganisms residing in human microbial habitats.

Most indigenous microbes occur in the intestinal tract, and their interactions with the host are largely unknown. Current understanding of host-microbe interactions links early microbial contact to the origin of disease, a theory that has its roots in the hygiene hypothesis. Modern life style appears to deprive the infant of conditions that provide adequate anti-inflammatory or tolerogenic stimuli upon antigen encounter. Thus, maturational signals from the environment and the diet are insufficient to adequately shape the immune system. This publication deals with the relationship between the gut microbiota as well as altered pattern of early microbial contact and the origin of human disease. New aspects of the original hygiene hypothesis are discussed in relation to disorders spanning from allergy and autoimmunity to obesity.The results presented suggest that all these disorders may be linked to aberrant antigen absorption and immune responses associated with dysfunction of mucosal defense. Arthropods that eat wood, foliage, and detritus have difficulty in digesting the cellulose in their food. A remarkable biological mechanism allows some species to overcome this problem: in eating fungal tissue they ingest cellulolytic enzymes that allow them to exploit the potential nutritive value of plant fiber. Michael M. Martin, a chemical ecologist, here describes his laboratory investigations that led to the discovery of this phenomenon and explores the insights they have produced. In his opening chapter he provided general background on the three major areas of his research: cellulose digestion in insects, insect-microbial interactions, and the biochemical bases for symbiosis. He devotes two chapters to the role of fungi in the nutrition of two groups of wood feeders, the fungus-frowing termites and the siricid woodwasps, insects involved in complex, highly coevolved mutualistic associations with fungi. In the next two chapters he discusses the importance of fungi in the dietes fo detritus feeders and in wood-feeding cerambycid beetles, insects involved casually with free-living fungi. He then concludes with a chapter on the fungus-growing ants, another group that exhibits a spectacular mutualism with fungi. Michael M. Martin is Professor of Biology at the University of Michigan, where he has held a joint appointment as Professor of Chemistry and Biology.
