This dissertation provides a theoretical argument as to why practicing meditation can increase self-compassion and reviews the outcome literature that provides empirical support for this theoretical claim. The purpose of this work is to draw awareness to the potential enhancement of a positive and protective trait, such as self-compassion, thus expanding meditation research beyond symptom reduction and into the realm of positive psychology and spirituality. To provide a theoretical understanding, this paper begins by defining and discussing compassion and self-compassion from both Eastern and Western perspectives. A review of the empirical literature on self-compassion as it relates to psychological functioning is included to demonstrate the significance of studying this construct. Moderate correlational and preliminary experimental data suggest a link between self-compassion and higher levels of positive affect, happiness, optimism, as well as lower levels of anxiety, depression, and neuroticism. A discussion of types of meditation and the construct of mindfulness are included to provide a framework to understand the meditation research that is reviewed. A review of the limited empirical meditation studies with self-compassion as an outcome provide preliminary data that suggest that completion of a meditation course leads to statistically significant increases in self-compassion. Mechanisms by which meditation could increase self-compassion are discussed and empirical support for these mechanisms is included when appropriate. A discussion of current neuroimaging research regarding compassion and meditation is also included. This paper then provides suggestions for future research regarding the study of self-compassion as it relates to meditation. Finally, clinical implications of this dissertation are discussed.

They were thus instrumental in shaping and sustaining the wide-scale shift in medieval Christian sensibility from fear of God to compassion for the suffering Christ. Affective Meditation and the Invention of Medieval Compassion advances a new narrative for this broad cultural change and the meditative writings that both generated and reflected it. Sarah McNamer locates women as agents in the creation of the earliest and most influential texts in the genre, from John of Fécamp's Libellus to the Meditationes Vitae Christi, thus challenging current paradigms that cast the compassionate affective mode as Anselmian or Franciscan in origin. The early development of the genre in women's practices had a powerful and lasting legacy. With special attention to Middle English texts, including Nicholas Love's Mirror and a wide range of Passion lyrics and laments, Affective Meditation and the Invention of Medieval Compassion illuminates how these scripts for the performance of prayer served to construct compassion itself as an intimate and feminine emotion. To feel compassion for Christ, in the private drama of the heart that these texts stage, was to feel like a woman.
